ECDIS Courses
ECDIS Ltd have a Flag State approved course that has taken the IMO 1.27 model course and improved upon it significantly. Our course teaches the customer to get the most out of their equipment, particularly when GPS is unavailable by utilising redundancy in the form of traditional navigational methods.
All our trainers are highly experienced and knowledgeable in the practical use of ECDIS and combined have trained over 1000 mariners. Our course is 5 days (40 hours), flag state approved and competitive on price.
It is widely acknowledged that ECDIS Ltd are delivering the best ECDIS course on the market.
ECDIS Ltd provides the full range of ECDIS courses, from one day introductions through to bespoke packages for Marine Inspectors and Port Authorities who require ‘pocket cribs’ for use when quality controlling ECDIS onboard ship. However, our most popular course is our Flag State approved 5 day ECDIS course.
Our Flag State approved 5 day course is designed for candidates seeking certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch and for experienced mariners and other persons with navigational responsibilities, such as pilots.
Main Topics Covered on the 5 Day Course
- Principal types of electronic chart
- ECDIS data and presentation
- Specific functions for route planning and monitoring
- Display and function of other navigational information
- Errors in displayed data and of interpretationIntegrity monitoring
- Documentation, risk assessment and back-up
- Redundancy and use of ECDIS in lieu of GPS
- Practical exercises and exams to reinforce the subject matter
- Case Studies of recent MAIB reports on collisions and groundings
We very much believe that traditional navigational methods are still relevant – ECDIS is simply a navigational aid. The fact that there is a human interface means there is no excuse for not looking out of the window and making good judgements based on the practice of good seamanship. We will therefore train our customers to use ECDIS systems to navigate safely by utilising existing navigational knowledge and developing the use of traditional navigational methods as redundancy when GPS is not available.
Courses Available
Generic ECDIS IMO 1.27 Course
Our generic Flag State approved IMO 1.27 model based course may utilise a variety of DNV approved ECDIS. Each delegate has their own full ECDIS to work from for the duration of the course.
Type Specific ECDIS Course
The term `type specific` is commonly misunderstood in the maritime industry. A `type specific` module is a `bolt-on` course to be completed after the IMO 1.27 certificated course. It can last for between approximately one and three days and is there purely to teach the mariner the specific menu structures and intricacies of the ECDIS they have purchased. It does not teach any principles of navigation, nor how to utilise the ECDIS for the safety of Navigation – this is covered in the course above or below. This is often delivered locally by the manufacturer or through a `long distance` CBT based course. This can be delivered by ECDIS Ltd at a competitive price, please call or email for bookings. Note - like all non Flag State Approved IMO 1.27 based `type specific` courses, this does not carry any Flag State endorsed STCW`95 qualification, and does not negate the requirement for the above IMO 1.27 course.
Type Specific ECDIS IMO 1.27 Course
New to ECDIS Ltd. Now that we are working with the majority of the leading manufacturers we can offer our entire IMO 1.27 STCW`95 generic course on the type specific equipment that the mariner will be using. Please email or call mentioning the equipment you will be using to see if this is available to you.
Entry Requirements (Standard: IMO 1.27)
We are not attempting to teach our customers how to navigate. The customer should be armed with the requisite skills and knowledge prior to attending. Delegates should have experience in performing chart work and have knowledge of standard navigational procedures and equipment.
ECDIS Certification
Although lectures form the basis of the teaching the vast majority of time is spent ‘hands on’ operating the software in a comfortable, non-threatening learning environment. Training is undertaken by experienced professional instructors who will mentor the delegates throughout to ensure understanding. There is no formal examination but delegate performance and understanding will be continuously assessed throughout the course. A report on individual performance can be raised for employer and or employee feedback if required. for an example of our certificate click here.
